Gastrolinguistics of Solo Cuisine: The Internationalization of the Indonesian Language Based on Asta Cita and the SDGs for Indonesian Language for Foreign Speakers (BIPA) Students at Monash University, Australia
The internationalization of the Indonesian language as part of cultural diplomacy requires innovative and contextual strategies. This article explores the gastrolinguistic potential of Solo’s culinary heritage as a medium for teaching Indonesian as a Foreign Language (BIPA) through the development of interactive teaching materials based on the Asta Cita philosophy and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This study employs a descriptive qualitative approach with data collected through observation, interviews, and document analysis. The findings reveal that Solo’s traditional cuisine not only represents lexical richness and syntactic structures of the language but also embodies cultural values, sustainability principles, and life philosophies aligned with Asta Cita and the SDGs. The developed teaching materials include interactive digital modules that integrate culinary texts, thematic vocabulary, instructional videos, and intercultural projects. The implementation of these materials at Monash University received positive responses from BIPA students, enhancing their learning motivation, cultural understanding, and intercultural communication competence. This article recommends gastrolinguistics as a pedagogical approach in BIPA teaching to support the sustainable internationalization of the Indonesian language.
