Nyadran and Toussaint: Exploring Traditions to Enhance Critical Intercultural Literacy in French Language Learning
Intercultural competence is one of important elements to be mastered by foreign language learners. This study explores traditions to use in French language learning to enhance students’ intercultural literacy while developing their language competency. The purpose of this article is to explore the similarities and differences between Nyadran and Toussaint as well as the procedures of Indonesian-French intercultural literacy analysis. To achieve these goals, in this qualitative research, an intercultural approach is applied to identify cultural elements, find similarities and differences between them, interpret their practices, and conduct critical thinking towards Nyadran and Toussaint. The results of the analysis indicate that there is a common purpose in both traditions, mainly as a symbol of respect and tribute to ancestors and expression of gratitude for God's grace. Nyadran has a broader and deeper philosophical meaning which does not found in Toussaint, serves as a reminder of one's own death, strengthens ties of friendship, and provides entertainment. Indonesia Nyadran and France Toussaint critical intercultural literacy is carried out through five steps, including: 1) authentication, 2) familiarization, 3) identification, 4) comparison, and 5) critical awareness. By implementing these five critical literacy steps, students will have and practice critical thinking methods in learning French without ignoring local values.
