Representation of Masculinity in the Lyrics of Sheila On 7
The representation of masculinity in song lyrics often reflects the social construction of men's roles and identities in society. Song lyrics can reinforce, challenge, or reconstruct the existing portrayal of masculinity in real life. This research aims to analyze the representation of masculinity in the lyrics of Sheila On 7. As one of the most popular bands in Indonesia, Sheila On 7's songs often depict various aspects of social life, including men's roles and identities. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method with discourse analysis to identify the values of masculinity contained in the lyrics. Jonet Saltzman Chafetz's masculinity theory is used as the analytical framework. The research findings show that Sheila On 7's song lyrics represent masculinity in functional, sexual, emotional, intellectual, and impersonal aspects. Functionally, men are often depicted as responsible figures who serve as breadwinners and protectors. In terms of sexuality, masculinity is not overly explicit, but it is implicitly present in lyrics that suggest physical attractiveness and romanticism in men. The emotional aspect is strongly evident, portraying men as sensitive figures who are unafraid to express feelings and face emotional challenges, such as sadness and disappointment. Intellectually, the lyrics emphasize logical, rational, and wise thinking, especially in life decision-making. Meanwhile, the impersonal aspect is less common but can be seen in some songs, where men are portrayed as maintaining distance or appearing detached from deep emotions, possibly as a mechanism to protect themselves from pain or vulnerability. The representation of masculinity in Sheila On 7's song lyrics may influence public perceptions of men's roles in real life and shape social views on masculinity among music listeners.
